The United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) held an expert-seminar hosted by the Centro de Derechos Humanos of Universidad Diego Portales, from 4 to 5 December, and an inter-sessional meeting, from 6 to 8 December, in Santiago, Chile.
The purpose of the seminar was to gather information for the EMRIP’s 2018 study on free, prior, and informed consent, as provided for by the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
The purpose of the inter-sessional meeting of EMRIP was to discuss requests received for country engagement and plan for its activities in accordance with its new mandate. EMRIP also took the opportunity to meet with OHCHR staff from the region to inform them of its new mandate and consider possible modes of collaboration.
At the invitation of the Government of Chile, EMRIP held courtesy meetings with the President of the Republic and several government officials.
