Workshop on the participation of indigenous peoples in environmental decision-making

The Workshop on the participation of indigenous peoples in environmental decision-making was held on January 18 and 19, at the ILO offices in Santiago, Chile.

The Chilean Undersecretary for the Environment, Mr. Marcelo Mena, attended this workshop, as did the Canadian Ambassador to Chile, Mr. Marcel Lebleu, and representatives of Environment Canada, the Department of Native Peoples, and the Division of Natural Resources and Biodiversity of the Ministry of the Environment.

In this important context, subjects associated with the institutional viewpoint on mechanisms for the participation of indigenous peoples in Chile were addressed, as well as the role of the National Human Rights Institute (INDH) in the native peoples’ consultation processes. The representatives from Canada presented their experience regarding the general view of Canadian institutions with regard to their relationship with its indigenous peoples.
