08/01/2015

The Under-Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Edgardo Riveros, opened the international seminar: "Roads to Nuclear Disarmament: a Case of Convergence in Diversity" together with the United Nations High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Angela Kane. In the seminar which was held in the O'Higgins Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Under-Secretary noted that, "nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation play a significant role in International Security in Foreign Multilateral Policy in Chile." Under-Secretary Riveros added that, "since the return to democracy, our country has displayed intense and permanent diplomatic action to support initiatives seeking to consolidate a world order based on law and cooperation first, and weapons second." After the inauguration, there were a series of panels for discussion. The first was called, "Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons: Past, Present and Future," where Kane remarked that, "we must treat nuclear disarmament as a means for achieving a peaceful and more secure world rather than the other way around." The UN High Representative noted the significance of the seminar being held in Chile, emphasizing that, "non-nuclear weapon states...play a very strong role in disarmament."
