Canada’s International Trade Minister visits Chile to promote international trade and investment

13/03/2017

Canada’s International Trade Minister, Mr. François-Philippe Champagne, visited Chile between March 13 and 15, 2017, to promote international trade and investment.

During his visit to Chile, Minister Champagne met with government and business leaders, including the Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Heraldo Muñoz, and with the former Chilean President, Mr. Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, to discuss the benefits of progressive trade, in order to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Canada and Chile. Minister Champagne emphasized the close and increasing collaboration between Canada and Chile in the areas of trade, investment, defense, energy, mining and education, as well as in science, technology and innovation.

Bilateral trade of goods between Canada and Chile has more than tripled since the Free Trade Agreement between Chile and Canada entered into effect in 1997, reaching the figure of 2.4 billion dollars in 2016.

Direct investment by Canada in Chile reached over $15 billion Canadian dollars at the end of 2015, making Chile the primary destination for Canadian investment in South American and Central America, and putting it in tenth place globally.

MundoChile had the honor of providing simultaneous whispering modality interpreting services for support during the private meetings with Minister Champagne and his delegation, as well as during the lunch held by the Chile-Canada Chamber of Commerce in honor of their visit, in the framework of the commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Canada and Chile.
